Bet baseball with William Hill, America’s #1 sportsbook.
While one ace is in the midst of a historic MLB season, several other arms are logging in impressive campaigns on the mound. So which pitchers have been drawing the most betting action for Cy Young futures at William Hill?
Overall, the NL Cy Young futures market has more than twice the total dollars wagered as AL Cy Young as well as nearly double the total number of tickets.
Let’s look at the National League today, with Jacob deGrom currently the -200 odds-on favorite at William Hill to capture his third Cy Young in four years. The Mets star has been otherworldly so far, posting a 7-2 record and 0.50 ERA to go along with 117 strikeouts in just 72 innings pitched.
“His price is probably a little higher than normal just because there’s so much of the season left,” said Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill US. “But he’s won it multiple times and he looks so unhittable, so deGrom definitely warrants those odds. He’s had a few injury scares though. Any of these year-long awards are very tricky just because of the health factor.”
He opened atop the board at +300 when William Hill released its Cy Young futures markets on Feb. 17, and dropped down to +200 on Opening Day. He reached his current price of -200 on June 22.
After deGrom is Corbin Burnes at +650, followed by Walker Buehler and Brandon Woodruff at 10/1 each. Last year’s recipient Trevor Bauer now resides at 12/1 along with Kevin Gausman.
Not surprisingly, deGrom leads the way in both total number of tickets (14%) and total dollars wagered (49%) among all NL Cy Young bets at William Hill. That includes two different Nevada bettors each placing $5,000 on deGrom, with one at +200 ($15,000 total potential payout) and the other at +180 ($14,000 total potential payout).
Burnes and Gausman rank second and third in each category. Burnes has drawn 11% of the total number of tickets and 8% of the total dollars wagered, while Gausman has locked down 9% and 7% respectively. Another Nevada bettor laid $2,000 on Gausman back when he was 30/1 for a total potential payout of $62,000, the largest potential payout of any NL Cy Young futures wager at William Hill.
“We’re a small loser with deGrom, but we have more liability with Burnes and Gausman,” Bogdanovich said. “[Julio] Urias and [Joe] Musgrove we also lose pretty good with.”
