Golf returned to the Summer Games in 2016 after a 112-year absence. Now several of the top golfers in the world will be vying for the top prize in 2021, as four straight days of competing on the greens in Tokyo starts today at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.
William Hill has futures prices up for all 60 golfers participating, with recent Open Championship winner Collin Morikawa atop the board at +700. Jon Rahm was the original favorite at +450 before withdrawing due to a positive COVID-19 test. Morikawa had opened at 12/1.
“It was basically like setting odds for a whole different event once Rahm and [Bryson] DeChambeau weren’t playing,” said Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill US. “Now it’s an easier tournament to win for those top-15 guys or so just because the field is so small and a lot of them aren’t big names at all.”
After Morikawa is Xander Schauffele at +850, followed by Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama at 10/1 each. Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland are both at 12/1, while Paul Casey is at 16/1. Meanwhile, Patrick Reed, Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann are all at 17/1. Among those names, the bigger movers were Matsuyama (14/1 to 10/1), Casey (30/1 to 16/1), Smith (40/1 to 17/1) and Niemann (40/1 to 17/1).
Matsuyama and Morikawa are tops in total number of tickets to get a gold at 10% apiece, and they’re also second and third in total dollars wagered with 12% and 11% respectively. The leader in total dollars wagered, however, is a longshot.
Sungjae Im opened at 40/1 at William Hill before reaching his current number of 22/1. Im has captured 13% of the total dollars wagered, and he is also third with 7% of the total number of tickets. That includes one New Jersey bettor who put $2,500 on Im 22/1 for a total potential payout of $57,500.
Two $2,000 wagers for this event have come in at William Hill as well, one on Schauffele at +900 for a total potential payout of $20,000 and the other on Matsuyama 11/1 for a total potential payout of $24,000.
Another longshot that has been a noteworthy wager is Si-Woo Kim. Kim has moved from 50/1 to 45/1, and is fifth in total number of tickets at 5% and sixth in total dollars wagered at 5%.
