The first pitch of the 2021 season is just three Thursdays away, so let’s celebrate the occasion with our third MLB division win total odds and trends. After previously analyzing the AL East and AL Central, it’s the American League West’s turn.
The AL West is home to the most popular win total over and under bets by total dollars wagered at William Hill.
Let’s look at the current win totals first for each team in the division. The Athletics opened with the highest AL West win total at 88.5, however Oakland has since fallen to 86. That 2.5-win shift is tied for the biggest in MLB, as the Cardinals (88 to 85.5) and Royals (71 to 73.5) have also moved by the same amount.
Now the highest AL West win total belongs to the Astros, who sit at 88. Houston is the only AL West team that has not experienced a change to its opening number. The Rangers (69.5 to 68.5) dropped by a win, while the Angels (83 to 83.5) and Mariners (71 to 71.5) have each been slightly bumped up by half a win.
It’s natural to think that the Athletics win total would be the most popular under given its giant shift, yet that’s not the case. The under on the Rangers win total ranks first in both total number of tickets (81%) and total dollars wagered (94%). Texas is the only team whose under is attracting more than 55% of the total number of tickets.
Additionally, a pair of $2,200 wagers have come in on the Rangers under, with one at 69.5 (-110) and the other at 69 (-110). Both of those bets have total potential payouts of $4,200.
Oakland’s under, meanwhile, is drawing 74% of the total dollars wagered, whereas the over has gotten 60% of the total number of tickets. The only MLB teams with a more popular win total under than the Athletics based off total dollars wagered are the Rangers, Rays (92%) and Diamondbacks (80%).
Conversely, William Hill bettors are strongly backing the Angels to surpass their win total. Los Angeles has gotten 99% of the total dollars wagered on its over, which is tops in baseball. Additionally, the Angels’ over has snagged 88% of the total number of tickets. That only trails the Royals (93%) and their AL West foe Mariners (91%). Seattle’s over has also reeled in 84% of the total dollars wagered.
The majority of William Hill bettors are bullish on the Astros too, even with their high win total. Houston’s over has seized 78% of the total number of tickets as well as 60% of the total dollars wagered.
