January is coming to an end this week, which means one thing for college basketball fans: We’re one month closer to March.
The top contenders have really started to emerge from the pack in William Hill’s 2020-21 college basketball title futures. Preseason favorite Gonzaga has remained in the top spot, with odds now at +240. Baylor has the next-lowest price at +450, followed by Michigan at +900. Just four other teams have title odds shorter than 20/1 as of now at William Hill: Iowa (13/1), Tennessee (15/1), Villanova (18/1) and Texas (18/1).
Gonzaga opened at 10/1 along with Duke, Kansas and Kentucky when William Hill first released 2020-21 college basketball title futures back in March. Other significant movers among those near the top of the board include Michigan (opened at 40/1), Iowa (30/1), Tennessee (50/1) and Texas (75/1).
The two teams that opened with longer odds that have also experienced noteworthy shifts are UConn (150/1 to 35/1) and Alabama (150/1 to 40/1). The teams that have seen their odds fall dramatically include Duke (10/1 to 55/1), Kentucky (10/1 to 65/1), Michigan State (18/1 to 55/1) and Oregon (25/1 to 85/1).
The No. 1 -rated team in the country also ranks first in total dollars wagered among all 2020-21 college basketball title future wagers at William Hill. Gonzaga has seized 18% of the total dollars wagered, including one New Jersey bettor who put down $15,000 on Gonzaga +800 for a total potential payout of $135,000.
Three teams have drawn a $5,000 wager as well: Iowa at 18/1 ($95,000 total potential payout), Texas at 25/1 ($130,000 total potential payout) and West Virginia at 30/1 ($155,000 total potential payout).
Iowa is second in total dollars wagered at 9%, with Baylor close behind at 7%. Villanova and Illinois (30/1) round out the top 5 by collecting 5% apiece.
Gonzaga trails one team in total number of tickets, though: Iowa. The Hawkeyes have brought in 13% in this category and the Bulldogs have captured 9%. Villanova is the only other team to have attracted at least 5% of the total number of tickets, while Baylor, Michigan and Illinois are all at 4%.
A few notable bets have come in on long shots too. A New Jersey bettor placed $200 on Boise State 2000/1 for a total potential payout of $400,200, which is the largest total potential payout on a 2020-21 college basketball title future thus far at William Hill. That same bettor also placed $500 each on Georgia 750/1 ($375,500 total payout) and Northwestern 750/1 ($375,500 total payout). Boise State is now at 200/1, while Northwestern is at 400/1 and Georgia is at 1000/1.
A couple of Nevada bettors have strongly backed AAC teams. One laid $2,000 on Memphis 150/1 (Memphis is now at 85/1) for a total potential payout of $302,000, while another put $3,000 on UConn 85/1 for a total potential payout of $258,000.
