Week 10 of the college football season is the biggest one yet. It’s not just the biggest in terms of number of games, which is boosted by the MAC and Pac-12’s return this week. But it may also feature the top bet game this regular season.
“I think Clemson-Notre Dame will have a bigger handle than Alabama-Georgia,” said Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill US. “Notre Dame, Alabama, Clemson, those teams will draw monster action whenever they play. Georgia is down the pecking order a little. You throw in that it’s a late game, where people are going to bet with both hands, and I think it has a good shot of being the biggest bet game until the Playoff.”
After escaping Boston College with a 34-28 victory, No. 1 Clemson heads to South Bend to face No. 4 Notre Dame. Star quarterback Trevor Lawrence will miss his second straight game for the Tigers after testing positive for COVID-19.
Clemson opened as a 5.5-point road favorite at William Hill, and the spread has stayed there. Clemson is -220 on the moneyline while Notre Dame is +190 to pull off the outright upset.
“Pretty much any time you get a top-5 team and you’re getting points, there will be a zillion moneyline bets on that team,” said Bogdanovich. “It’s the same type of deal with a really good NFL team or a really good fighter when they’re an underdog. It’ll be really interesting to see what happens if there’s bad weather, to see how Clemson reacts to that. Clemson plays in the sunshine in most of their games, and their freshman QB [D.J. Uiagalelei] is from Southern California.”
Early on at William Hill, Clemson has attracted 56% of the total number of tickets and 65% of the total dollars wagered for all spread bets against Notre Dame. The Irish, however, have brought in 97% of the total number of tickets and 95% of the total dollars wagered for all the moneyline bets in this one.
There are three more ranked matchups this week, including one other top-10 showdown: No. 9 BYU (-3) at No. 21 Boise State on Friday night, No. 23 Michigan (-3.5) at No. 13 Indiana and No. 8 Florida vs. No. 5 Georgia (-3.5) at a neutral site in Jacksonville.
The line in Florida vs. Georgia has moved 1.5 points from its opening number, as the Gators have gone from +5 to +3.5. The only games involving a top-25 team that have had a bigger spread shift are No. 14 Oklahoma State (-10.5 to -12.5) at Kansas State and No. 7 Texas A&M (-8 to -10) at South Carolina.
