Week 8 of the college football season welcomes two conferences back into the fold, as the Big Ten and Mountain West are making their season debuts. The college football schedule continues to grow with each passing week, as will the sport’s betting handle at William Hill.
“We had a small isolated group of games on Saturday, so all the big games were bet really heavily,” said Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading at William Hill. “Now people will have the chance to spread their money out more. But it’s good to have the Big Ten along with the Mountain West back this weekend.”
William Hill has odds up for seven Big Ten games and five Mountain West games, with the former highlighted by one of the most important showdowns this weekend between two ranked foes.
“Michigan-Minnesota out of the block is enormous,” said Bogdanovich. “That’ll be a monster game, and I think it’ll be the most bet of any Big Ten game this week. The line is right around a field goal so it’s a more competitive game and it’s a later game too. P.J. Fleck had done a miraculous job as the Minnesota head coach so far, but are they at the Michigan level with that quality of athlete and recruiting? Michigan was -2 and now it’s up to 3, so somebody’s betting Michigan early on.”
Besides No. 18 Michigan (-3) vs. No. 21 Minnesota, the other top-25 matchups on the docket are No. 23 North Carolina State vs. No. 14 North Carolina (-15.5) and No. 17 Iowa State vs. No. 6 Oklahoma State (-3.5).
There isn’t a bigger spread in the opening weekend of Big Ten play than Nebraska vs. No. 5 Ohio State. The Buckeyes are 26.5-point favorites over the Cornhuskers, and the current total of 67.5 is also the highest of any Big Ten game this week. Nationally, that spread is dwarfed by Syracuse vs. No. 1 Clemson, where the Tigers are massive 46.5-point favorites.
A few Week 8 games have already seen noticeable line movement and sizable early wagers.
Two spreads have shifted by two points already: Arkansas State vs. Appalachian State (-11 to -13) and No. 19 Virginia Tech (-7.5 to -9.5) vs. Wake Forest.
Additionally, six different sides have attracted a $5,500 bet at William Hill, which is tied for the largest of any Week 8 game thus far. They are Louisiana Lafayette (+2.5) vs. UAB, Georgia Tech (+4) vs. Boston College, Syracuse vs. No. 1 Clemson (-45.5), South Carolina vs. LSU (-6.5), Air Force (-6.5) vs. San Jose State and Illinois vs. No. 14 Wisconsin (-19).
