The first major European soccer league returns this weekend, as Germany’s Bundesliga is slated to come back on Saturday, May 16.
Bundesliga features some of the best soccer teams and players in the world, so let’s get you caught up with some of the top contenders in this 18-team league before play resumes on the pitch.
There are no playoffs in Bundesliga, so the champion is decided by best regular-season record. The top four teams in the standings are separated by a mere six points, with national powerhouse Bayern Munich currently residing in first place at 55 points.
Bayern Munich is aiming for its eighth consecutive championship, a streak that dates back to the 2012-13 season. Star players Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller are Bundesliga’s 2019-20 season leaders in goals and assists respectively. It also helps to have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Manuel Neuer.
Borussia Dortmund (51 points), RB Leipzig (50) and Borussia Monchengladbach (49) are neck-and-neck right below Bayern Munich.
Borussia Dortmund finished just two points shy of Bayern Munich last season, and are a major challenger this time around with forwards Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus serving as major threats to score at any time.
For RB Leipzig, Timo Werner and Marcel Sabitzer lead the way. Werner ranks in the top 10 in the league in both goals (second, 21) and assists (tied for ninth, 7), while Sabitzer is considered one of the best midfielders in all of Bundesliga.
