Joe Burrow’s 2019 Heisman odds opened at 150/1 at William Hill, and the former LSU quarterback rewarded his bettors with a legendary season and futures payout. Will lightning strike twice with another longshot taking home the hardware this time around?
Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields opened as the 7/2 favorite to win the 2020 Heisman after finishing third in the voting last season. Fields broke onto the scene in a big way in his debut campaign in Columbus, throwing for 41 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions. Trevor Lawrence is right behind at 4/1, the second year in a row that the Clemson signal-caller started off with the second-best odds—his 3/1 opener in 2019 only trailed then-Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa’s +225.
A couple new starting quarterbacks for their respective teams follow, as Georgia grad transfer Jamie Newman sits at 10/1 while Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler is at 12/1. Newman comes over from Wake Forest, where he threw for 2,868 yards and 26 TDs last season while finishing second among all ACC quarterbacks in rushing yards (574). Rattler hopes to be the next product of Lincoln Riley’s wizardry, as three different Sooner QBs (Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts) have finished in the top two in Heisman voting over the past three seasons.
There’s tough competition a little over an hour away from Rattler, though, as Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard is tied with the lowest odds of any running back at 25/1, along with Clemson standout Travis Etienne. Hubbard ran for a FBS-leading 2,094 yards in Stillwater last season as a sophomore, and also was tied for third with 21 scores on the ground.
There are four players who opened with the same 150/1 odds as Burrow in 2019: Purdue’s do-it-all weapon Rondale Moore, Indiana gunslinger Michael Penix Jr., Clemson wideout Justyn Ross and Louisville dual-threat quarterback Micale Cunningham.
