Pitchers and catchers are slated to report next week, meaning the first pitch of the 2021 MLB season is inching closer.
In an offseason that saw several stars switch teams, it should make for fascinating division races this campaign. William Hill recently released its 2021 MLB division odds for all 30 teams, so let’s take a look at who is priced where to finish on top.
The defending World Series champion Dodgers are the biggest favorites of any squad, as Los Angeles is -500 to capture a ninth straight NL West crown. The Dodgers are also the +200 favorites to take home the 2021 World Series. The Padres, despite being tied for the second-lowest World Series odds at +650, are still +300 to win the NL West. The Giants and Diamondbacks are next at 60/1 each, with the Rockies well behind at 500/1.
The Yankees (-220) and White Sox (-150) also are sizable chalk to capture the AL East and AL Central respectively. While both teams made the postseason last year, neither won their division. The ballclubs that did each have the second-lowest division odds this time around, as the Rays are listed at +350 and the Twins are at +200. The Blue Jays (+450) and Indians (+550) also figure to make some noise.
There are a couple tight races expected as well, with some divisions featuring several contenders and not much separation regarding their odds. In fact, two divisions have four teams with odds lower than 10/1 to finish in first.
“Both the NL East and NL Central are wide-open this year,” said Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading at William Hill US. “A lot of good teams, and they’re deep too. The Mets and Cardinals had the big offseasons, but they face a lot of competition. Good luck winning those divisions.”
The NL East is the only division as of now to have co-favorites listed, at the Braves and Mets are each at +150. The Nationals and Phillies lurk at +650 apiece, with the Marlins bringing up the rear at 18/1.
Over in the NL Central, the Cardinals are atop the board at +125. The Reds (+220), Brewers (+325) and Cubs (+700) are all looming nearby. Meanwhile, the Pirates are tied for the longest division odds of any team with the Rockies, as Pittsburgh is also 500/1 to lock up the NL Central.
It figures to be a three-horse race in the AL West, as the Athletics (+120) are slightly edging out the Astros (+150) with the Angels (+325) in range. The Athletics (+220) were one of three 2020 division winners that did not open as the favorite at William Hill when MLB division odds were re-released last year, along with the Rays (+340) and Cubs (+240).
